Reviving our Nature Study

After finding pine cones on a walk around the neighborhood yesterday, we decided to restart our nature study.  Sometimes I forget that many of things  my older children learned about nature when they were little, Jennah, Hawwa, and Siddiqah would also love to learn.   I assume sometimes that they already know so much just from frequent exposure.

So, today the girls created title pages and the first page about pine cones in their new nature journal.  Insha Allah, we will focus on the journal for the last part of our official homeschool year which will end at the beginning of June this year.

  1. Assalam u alaikum. I was reading some of your older nature study entries, and discovered you have a bio degree. Mashallah, that explains why you are some nature inclined. I am exactly the same way. I was wondering if you have a post that explains what you include in your study.

    • Wa alaikum as salaam UmmAbdullah,

You know I studied more microbiology in college and wasn’t very interested in nature oriented studies until I became Muslim and Allah opened my eyes to many different things, subhannallah.

I really don’t have a set study other than the nature study I share on here last year. I allow the children to lead most of the time and when they see something they don’t know or want to learn more about we just go for it! I then try to relate things back to Qur’an and the Sunnah.

  2. Assalaamu Alaikum sis
Mashaa Allaah I just do love this Nature Study idea. I am actually thinking how well I could do this in the desert with Maimoonah. Any ideas are welcome Insha Allaah! Would love to try this out!

    • Wa alaikum as salaam Umm Maimoonah,

The first thing that come to mind are ants! I’m sure you have them. The children are so good at finding things that we overlook because they are closer to the ground and are newer to life than we are. Let Maimoonah be your guide, insha Allah.

      • Yes we do get Ants outside not inside the house. Jazzakillaah Khayr for this. Insha Allaah I will use your Nature Study Guide and start on it soon. I was thinking what to do with Maimoonah till the next year after Eid as we will be finishing the school year soon. So this would be ideal with summer around! Thanks for the Idea! Baarakallaah Feekum!

  3. Assalamualaikum Umm Tafari.
Alhamdulillah, we used a lot of the ideas in your nature study guide last summer. It was very beneficial. I think I learnt a lot more than the children Masha-Allah 🙂

    • Wa alaikum as salaam Umm Sayang,

Really? That’s great, maashaa Allah. I can’t even tell you how many times I have researched topics and listened to others share their knowledge and I have also feel like I benefitted more than the children.
