In the last post I had decided that the girls would take the standardized test instead of going with the portfolio evaluation route to show progress. Well, I ended up ordering just the first grade test for Hawwa and the fifth grade test for Jamilah to check them out before ordering the rest. I am glad that those were the only two that I ordered because I changed my mind yet again and only gave Jamilah the test. I was under the impression that I would be able to read the test to Hawwa and that was not the case. It wasn’t a fun experience and I realized how much more fulfilling the portfolio evaluation has been for us compared to the test. We will receive Jamilah’s results in a few weeks.
So, we decided to go back to the portfolio evaluations for the rest of the girls which took place today. They all went well and only took 2 hrs. this year. From past experiences I realized that I needed just stick with the minimum amount of work samples. No frills. Everything was pretty much straightforward so it went quickly. The girls did well on their reading presentations as they had practiced and were ready to read aloud. I didn’t use any curriculum this year and just pulled from different resources. She asked me how I knew what to cover and I informed her that I had now been doing this for awhile so was more than familiar with the sequence of topics. She also really liked that I incorporated the Girl Scout badges, pins, and patches into our homeschooling. We intergrated the requirements for the awards into our homeschooling so that actually made up a huge part of our curriculum. Earning those awards was a huge motivator and it just makes the mundane more bearable!
She did encourage the girls to continue their studies over the summer. I assured her that we would continue to plug on to a certain extent especially with the basics. She had an appointment right after ours so she didn’t stay as long as she usually does. Anyway, it is over until next time, insha Allah.
