Today we received Jamilah’s long awaited test results. She took the California Achievement Test (CAT) which is one of many nationally recognized standarized tests. It is the only one that I know of that a parent can administer themselves. She did slightly better than average and average on math and slightly above average on vocabulary, average on comprehension, and slightly below average on language mechanics and language expression. Overall she scored in the 5th stanine which is average. Considering I only reviewed the material with her right before the test and considering she didn’t complete a formal grammar program this year, I am pleased with the results. Also, this was her first test taking venture.
I would like to see her improve in the language mechanics and language expression areas, so we will focus more on those areas this coming year. I also plan to incorporate test taking skills/strategies into our homeschooling curriculum as well as these tests aren’t going away. I don’t know if I mentioned this before but these are all multiple choice tests which I have always found to be the most challenging. I have never been a good multiple choice test taker and would rather write an essay any day. Regardless, they need to learn about the strategy involved because these tests aren’t just about content.
So, we will mail the results to the county and put this behind us as we look forward to a short vacation next week, insha Allah.
