Yesterday was the last day of school for the children until next Monday. It ended on a good note. I visited Hawwa for lunch and then visited her classroom as well. It was nice to see her projects, a native American village, and work displayed on the school walls. One of her recent art projects, a clay bee, was chosen to be displayed at the local botanical gardens along with some other students’ projects. We will receive free tickets in order to go view it.
Hannah and Jamilah attended their first art club meeting yesterday before school. Instead of taking the bus, I drove them to school at 7:30am. They made bracelets out of bottle tabs.
They are also interested in participating in a girls’ volleyball club which takes place in the spring. I am very pleased with the opportunitiea available to them through the schools.
As for Yahya, he has started basketball season and is the team’s leader since he is the oldest player as well as the only returning eight grader. He is also one of four boys who represents his school as part of the Student Government Association this year. I am hoping these experiences will benefit him in applying to our county’s high school speciality centers. During the break, I would like for him to work on the essays required for each one.
As for me, I recently filled out an online application for a tutoring position at a company I worked for when I was pregnant with Yahya about 15 years ago. I previously worked in an tutoring center inside the inner city schools. This position would be in a free standing center closer to my home. The director emailed me wanting to know what subjects I felt most comfortable with and was also interested with setting up an interview next month. They don’t pay any more than they did 15 years ago, but there is no prep work required nor anything for me take home and work on. There is also lots of flexibility. Plus there are also opportunities for upward mobility. So, we’ll see…
We will be spending the rest of the break giving the girls’ room a makeover. My parents have redone dressers, cut their old carpet, and purchased the paint. Can’t wait, insha allah.

Wa alaikum as salaam, There are parent volunteers at the elementary level especially at the girls’school. Is that allowed in the UK? More parent involvememt also always for more funds raised through fundraisers thus more money for the school. Do they allow fundraising?
When I was in primary school I do remember that a parent/carer could volunteer. I am not sure about now, I have never heard of anyone doing that these days. I think most teachers have an assistant anyway. Regarding fundraising that is the main job of the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) who hold various fundraising events.
