After a half day off school on Friday for a teachers’workday, the girls, Isa, and I attended a teaparty at Girl Scouts. In addition to the snacks and tea, they played some games and just got to spend some time with their friends. Meanwhile, my husband attended Yahya’s soccer game. (By the way, Jamilah didn’t make her school’s soccer team.)
So, after that short hiatus from homework, the girls were back at their assignments in Saturday. Jamilah and Hannah have both received a project in reading class, so they requested I take them to the county library to check out some books. To be honest, I prefer they utilize their school library more now as they seem to be able to take greater responsibility for their items, but Jamilah, my bookworm, insists that the county library has newer books. She reads much more than I like actually. It has become a hobby for her and I find her on her bed with a book constantly. I believe too much reading can make you lazy. She has expressed that she would like to become a librarian though, insha Allah.
While we were at the library yesterday, I ran into a sister with her two children. She requested that Jamilah suggest some books for her daughter (8 years old) who is also a bookworm. Jamilah just loved that and felt right in her element.
Jennah didn’t venture out with me to the library as she wasn’t feeling so well yesterday. Spring allergies are kicking in here. She did finish her chosen book, Sarah Plain and Tall, which she will complete her written assignment about today. She also has a simple machine test to study for in addition to word study.
The weather was rainy this weekend, so there wasn’t much else for them to do anyway.

If you restrict her reading what does she do instead? Doesn’t she just substitute another pastime?

Well, it wouldn’t mind if she developed another hobby. She could stand to spend more time studying for tests for sure and cleaning her room.
Simple machines are levers, wheel and axles, pulleys, screws, wedges, and inclined planes. This is third grade science. I never learned this until physical science in 8th grade!

Ok! I understand what the machine test is now, I was thinking it indicated a type of test not the subject matter lol!
I can see why you’d like her to study and clean more, but its going to be hard to entice her away from reading for those!

My eldest two are great readers mashaAllah, and they take that after me. I also thought that was a great asset, but of late I am beginning to think that the current reading material is taking over. I need to gear their reading more towards Islamic knowledge now inshaAllah.
A sister was telling me how she always encouraged her son to read, but on a recent umrah trip every time she looked at her son he was reading a novel that he sneaked into his ihram. She was saying that there they were in masjid al haram, with this wonderful chance to pray, read Quran and make du’aa and he couldn’t take his attention away from the book. This discussion has reminded me of this, I need to check out Islamic book shops to see if any new titles have been published recently.
