This past Sunday I was able to get back to my regular planning and scheduling after having been away for the past two Sundays. I felt very discumbobulated for the past two weeks due to missing those planning days.
We did end up going camping which overall was great but again I found it difficult getting back on track since I was away on a Sunday. There is just so much to take care of at home and so many preparations that need to be done for the upcoming week, I am not sure it is worth it to me. Maybe they can just go without me next time.
I ended up quickly getting a weekly plan in place Monday and we did accomplish some academic work. We also started Girl Scouts this week and I am again Hannah’s and Jamilah’s Cadette leader. We decided to begin with earning the badge related to forensic science so I am able to incorporate that into homeschooling and have that be our science activities for the time being. So far we conducted a coffee filter chromatography experiment and also plan to extract DNA from a banana as well as learn about blood splatter.
In addition to the experiments, the girls are required to research five books related to this topic. We will fit this into our language arts as well. I am hoping that a related field trip may materalize as well.
Things are starting to pick up on Yahya’s end as well. Last week we attended his school’s back to school night and it seems like the only thought on everyones’ mind was high school. I am concerened whether he will receive credit for the courses he is taking this year as they are really high school courses such as Latin II and Earth Science. That will surely be one of my first questions at the upcoming high school fair next week.
I still don’t feel like I am spending enough time with my younger children on their work. I continue to feel like I just have to cram in as much as possible with them in the evening after my husband gets home. Siddiqah and I were able to get some one on one time last week and attended a Tshirt art class at the library where she made this groovy shirt.
Today we visited the library and the girls checked out books and videos. I attended a storytime with Siddiqah although I think she is outgrowing them. Isa stayed for part of the program but left after awhile. He just isn’t interested really.
So after that outing, I am a bit worn out and will again wait until my husband comes home before resuming anymore academic work with them.

I don’t understand this question mark over credits for courses I read about in American blogs. Over here there are standard exams taken at 16. What a student does next depends on the grades they get in those standard exams which everyone does. There is no question of courses not being worthy of getting credit. What does that mean?

Apparently, it varies from school to school as to whether they will accept the courses due to his school being a private school which is not accredited. They don’t go by the public school standard curriculum and there is no standardized test for each subject like you all have. So I am assuming that the high schools look at the course syllabus and the student’s grade in the course and then make a decision. I guess we will find out more this Monday at the coffee with the Head of School. His school really holds our hands through this process as it has turned into almost like applying to college!

MashaAllah that is great that you are back on track. I definitely would say that the camping trip was well worth it, you need to take a breather from the home ed (I’m sure that I am not the only one who feels strangled by it at times?!)
I am intrigued by the next step with Yahya; does he need to score certain marks to enter high school? Is it a purely selective process?

I suppose you are right about the camping trip. I guess I just missed out on my “me” time. That made me feel strangled.
If he plans on attending any other private school or public school specialty center or governors’ school, then there is an application process complete with an essay, testing, required transcripts, and required recommendations. Plus some schools may also required an interview.
If he attends our assigned local high school, all he has to do is register.

So, it is comparable to the college application process here. We won’t know until late winter or early spring which school he will attend, insha Allah.
